Although you can’t tell by the picture, three nights ago was a pretty sad night for me…and all of bulldog nation. It was the night of the College Football National Championship game between the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama.
A big group of us all went over to a friend’s place to eat, drink, and cheer on the dawgs. And let me just say that UGA hasn’t played in a national championship game since 1983….1983!!! Long before I was even alive. The last time they won the national title was 1980. So UGA making it to the national championship game this year was kind of a big deal.
UGA was leading the whole game (at one point we were leading 20-7)…until the last quarter. And that last quarter made me a nervous wreck. Bama eventually tied it up with minutes left. They even had a chance to win the game by kicking a field goal with seconds left, but the kicker ended up missing – which sent the game into overtime. Unfortunately for us, Bama ended up winning. 26-23. I’m sure that score and game will haunt dawgs fans for a long time.
There’s a running joke in Georgia that it’s tough to be a fan of any sports team in the state of Georgia. Some people refer to it as a curse. Whether it be basketball, baseball, college football, or the NFL – our teams tend to have amazing seasons and make it close to the championship game or actually make it to the championship game but they end up choking. We simply can’t win the big games in Georgia.
This game was an unfortunate reminder of this past Super Bowl game. The 2017 Super Bowl was when the Atlanta Falcons blew a 28-3 lead and lost to the New England Patriots.
Maybe one day a Georgia sports team will break the curse and put an end to this joke. But until then, I’ll continue to root for them. I’m just sad I have to wait seven and a half months until college football starts back up again.
But at the end of the day – I’m still so proud of the season UGA had and it’s always great to be a Georgia Bulldog! GO DAWGS!!!!
